A classic application is in Cassegrain Optical Systems telescopes and other similar imaging systems. In a Cassegrain telescope, a large primary concave mirror with a central hole collects incoming light and reflects it towards a smaller, convex secondary mirror. The secondary mirror then reflects the light back through the hole in the primary mirror to a focal point behind the primary mirror.
Multipass Absorption Cells
Another significant application is in multipass absorption cells, which are used for gas sensing and spectroscopy. In these systems, a laser beam is directed into a cell containing a gas sample. The light is reflected back and forth between two mirrors, with one of the mirrors having a central hole. The beam enters the cell through the hole in one mirror, is reflected multiple times, and then exits the cell, often through the same hole.
