COLOR GLASS FILTERS

Color glass filter is an absorptive filter that manipulates light by selectively absorbing specific wavelengths. Unlike interference filters, color glass filters achieve their spectral properties from the intrinsic absorption characteristics of the glass itself.

The spectral performance of a color glass filter is primarily determined by two factors:
Glass Composition: The specific colorants used dictate which wavelengths are absorbed. Different types of glasses, such as those from manufacturers like SCHOTT and HOYA, have unique transmission curves.

Filter Thickness: Since the filtering is based on absorption, the thickness of the glass directly affects the amount of light that is absorbed. A thicker filter will absorb more light and have a steeper transition between the blocked and transmitted wavelengths.

Color glass filters are cost-effective, angle-insensitive, durable and creates little unwanted reflection in an optical system. However, they have broad transmission band, heats up due to energy absorption, are typically difficult to achieve specific, customized transmission curve due to limited glass formulations.
